How to clean windows without streaks

Streaks on clean windows nearly always come down to the wrong tool or the wrong time of day. Here is the method professionals use and the mistakes that leave marks.

The right tools make the difference

A professional squeegee with a new rubber blade, a microfibre cloth and a few drops of washing-up liquid in lukewarm water will go a long way. Avoid spray-bottle window cleaner; it often leaves a film that attracts dust.

    Step by step

Never clean windows in direct sunlight. The heat dries the water before you can squeegee it and you are guaranteed streaks.

    • Dust the frame and sill first, otherwise grit ends up in the water
    • Wet the whole pane generously with the soapy water
    • Squeegee from the top down in one long, even stroke
    • Wipe the squeegee blade dry with a cloth after each stroke
    • Finish the edges with a dry microfibre cloth

Between the sashes and the balcony door

Two-pane windows with removable sashes open by turning the catches in the frame and folding them up. Clean both the inside of the outer sash and the outside of the inner. Do not forget the lower part of the balcony door, where dog nose marks and rain splashes collect.

When a weekend is not enough

Glazed balconies, tall villa windows and roof windows are dangerous to clean on your own. Our window cleaning in Gothenburg uses telescopic poles and safety equipment, and the RUT deduction is applied directly to the invoice.
