What is included in a proper stairwell cleaning?
Stairwell cleaning is more than mopping the floor. The stairwell, entrance, elevator and laundry room should be at the same quality level so the property feels cared for from the front door upwards.
If you want to outsource the whole responsibility, our housing associations can manage it with dedicated staff and clear routines.
- Vacuuming and mopping of floors and stairs
- Wiping of handrails, railings and door handles
- Polishing of windows in the stairwell and entrance
- Cleaning of elevator walls, buttons and mirror
- Wiping of mailboxes, intercom and code locks
- Emptying of any waste baskets in the entrance
How often should the stairwell be cleaned?
Frequency depends on the number of apartments, location and wear. As a rule of thumb, once a week is enough for a normal stairwell, while larger properties and ground-floor entrances often need twice.
- Smaller stairwells, 10–20 apartments: once a week
- Larger stairwells, 20+ apartments or high traffic: twice a week
- Ground-floor entrance and elevator: always at the same pace as the stairwell
- Laundry room: at least once a week, ideally combined with supervision
- Deep clean of the stairwell: 1–2 times per year
What the board should require from the supplier
A good cleaning agreement is not about the lowest price but about the same people coming back and you knowing whom to reach when something isn't right.
- The same cleaners over time, not new staff every week
- A clear room-specific checklist attached to the agreement
- A named point of contact the board can always reach
- On-site quality control at least quarterly
- F-skatt, collective agreement and liability insurance
